Consumer Electronics Regulations

The world of consumer electronics is changing, reflected by consumer and legislative demands for more sustainable practices and products. More importance is being placed on climate neutral, resource-efficient economies, resulting in increased regulation everywhere.

In this blog, we look at some recent regulatory developments affecting the Consumer Electronics industry.

Indiana (USA): E-Cycle Program Updates & Reminders

On 5 November 2024, the Indiana Department of Environmental Management issued a reminder that manufacturers participating in program year 15 (January 1, 2024 – December 31, 2024) of the Indiana E-Cycle Program must submit an online registration and annual report by March 1, 2025.

This report is to cover the previous calendar year, ending on December 31, and can serve as both the company registration for the current year and the annual report for the previous calendar year. Manufacturers can access the online report through IDEM’s Re-TRAC portal. The Manufacturer Reporting Guidance [PDF] provides an overview and step-by-step instructions on how to complete the online reports.

Philippines: Comments Requested on Draft Philippine National Standard (DNPS) on Plugs and Socket Outlets

The Department of Trade and Industry’s Bureau of Philippine Standards (DTI-BPS) recently released an announcement seeking comments for the new Draft Philippine National Standard (DNPS) on plugs and socket outlets. The title of the DNPS is DPNS 2117:2024 – Plugs and socket-outlets for household and similar purposes – Configurations and dimensions.

According to the announcement, DPNS 2117 specifies the configuration and corresponding dimension of plugs and socket-outlets used in the Philippines for household and similar purposes. It covers plugs and socket-outlets intended for either indoor or outdoor locations and exclusively for AC applications with rated voltage not more than 250 volts.

The draft standard covers both rewireable and non-rewireable plugs and socket-outlets used as replacements or incorporated in appliances, IT equipment, luminaires, cord sets, cord extension sets and other electrical and electronic devices intended for use in homes and offices. Interested parties may access read-only copies of the DPNS here. The commenting template can also be found on the 1BPS website.

Suggestions requiring revision and modifications of the text should indicate the preferred wordings and the relevant clause number should be quoted against any comment. Deadline for submission comments is 10 December 2024.

The DTI-BPS is the National Standards Body authorized to promulgate Philippine National Standards. Conformance to PNS requirements is voluntary and may be used as reference by any interested parties unless a regulatory authority uses the PNS as reference in the technical regulation for a specific product or service where conformance to PNS or related parts becomes mandatory.
