Introduction

In April 2024, following a 2-year legislative process, EU lawmakers finally adopted the Right-to-Repair Directive on Common Rules Promoting the Repair of Goods, which should ensure better access to affordable repair for selected products.

In this blog, we give an overview of the EU Right to Repair Directive. For further information on this topic check out our webinar on-demand “Prepare to Repair: Right-to-Repair Rules in the US and the EU“.

Overview

In order to reduce premature disposal of viable goods, the EU’s Right to Repair Directive strengthens the provisions related to the repair of goods, allowing consumers to seek affordable repair from the repair service provider of their choice.

It promotes sustainable consumption, by promoting a life cycle of goods which includes re-use, repair and refurbishment, while also producing benefits for consumers by avoiding costs associated with new purchases in the short term.

Scope

The scope is limited to goods purchased by consumers and to products already covered by repairability requirements under EU law, including:

  • Washing machines;
  • Tumble dryers;
  • Dishwashers;
  • Refrigerating appliances;
  • Electronic displays;
  • Welding machines;
  • Vacuum cleaners;
  • Servers;
  • Mobile phones;
  • Cordless phones;
  • Tablets; and
  • Batteries of light means of transport (such as e-bikes and e-scooters).

This Directive does not apply to business-to-business, nor to industrial goods.

Warranty Period

Manufacturers will now have to offer repair services, even after the legal warranty period has expired.

If repair under the warranty period is offered, consumers will now benefit from an extended warranty period of one year.
