Consumer Electronics Regulations
RINA, a veteran organisation in the sphere of compliance and certification which was founded in the year 1861, hosted its prestigious annual conference this year at the Hilton Hotel in London on the 6th and 7th of November.
I had the privilege of being a speaker and representing Compliance and Risks at the conference to shed some light on the topic of Brexit Product Safety. My fellow speakers included RINA experts, Enforcement Officers from the UK Office of Product Safety and Standards (OPSS) and implementation guideline advisors for the EU Commission to name a few.
Below you can get a taste for what the conference was all about.
PFAS Update
This session summarised the regulatory trends of PFAS, its uses, restrictions and timelines.
The UK has similar PFAS plans as the EU. A restrictions dossier on PFAS in fire-fighting foams (FFFs) is in progress. The current UK HSE plans do not specifically include a PFHxA restriction. A universal PFAS ban is not in scope in the UK. The session also covered PFAS requirements from the US, Canada, etc.
UK OPSS and the PTSI Act 2022
This session gave us an insight into the inner workings of the UK Office of Product Safety and Standards (OPSS). Some of the guiding principles of the OPSS towards drafting a regulation are consistency, transparency and accountability. The enforcement measures available to the OPSS are notices that mandate compliance, stop orders, product recalls or penalty notices. This session gave us a brief history of how the PTSI Act came into existence and its overview.
UK Product Safety in a Post-Brexit World
This session gave an overview of the labelling changes in the UK since exit day and showed where the UK and EU rules converge and where they diverge. It highlighted the upcoming proposed voluntary digital labelling rules and the fast-track UKCA process.
Conclusion
I was impressed with the legal and technical expertise at the annual RINA Conference and I am grateful for the opportunity to have been a part of this.
