Emerging Requirements & Standards for Measuring Product Circularity and Supply Chain Data Collection
Webinar Overview
Emerging Circular Economy (CE) requirements and opportunities are driving manufacturers and their value networks to measure and communicate information on circularity characteristics of products. But how exactly to measure and assess circularity so that the claims are robust and credible, and how to acquire the necessary data has been a challenge. Trade-offs that can arise between circularity characteristics complicates the situation, and requires that a holistic approach needs to be taken. Emerging standards are starting to address these topics to help manufacturers assess their own internal capabilities, evaluate opportunities, and make credible claims for regulatory compliance, ecolabels and other voluntary initiatives.
In this webinar, we discuss the recently published ISO 59020 on “Circular Economy – Measuring and assessing circularity performance”. It provides a framework for circularity measurement and core circularity indicators that should be included in any circularity evaluation.
The IEC standards development organization is also developing a comprehensive suite of standards to support the electrical and electronics industry in product circularity. We present an overview of the standards – published, upcoming, and on the standardization roadmap.
To support communication of circularity data in the supply chain, IEC 62474 (Material Declaration) was updated last year to add data fields for circularity characteristics needed for ISO 59020. The upcoming ISO/IEC 82474-1 cross-sector material declaration standard is expected to be published in January 2025 and will further expand the ability to communicate material and product circularity information. It also adds a declaration module for process chemicals. ISO/IEC 82474-1 is being developed jointly by ISO and IEC to support declaration needs from a broad range of industries and to provide harmonized cross-sector data exchange.

Webinar Agenda
- What does Circular Economy (CE) actually mean?
- Upcoming requirements and opportunities for measuring and improving product circularity.
- An overview of the ISO 59020 framework and core circularity indicators for measuring and assessing circular performance.
- Considerations and challenges for product manufacturers, including trade-offs in design aspects to improve circularity.
- Current and upcoming IEC International Standards for assessing circularity characteristics and design guidelines for improving product circularity.
- An overview of the IEC 62474 and ISO/IEC 82474-1 material declaration standards, including:
- The circularity data capabilities.
- How they can be used to help meet emerging regulatory and procurement requirements for circularity performance, eco-design, CRM content, and Digital Product Passport (DPP).
- The need for robust definitions and criteria to ensure consistency in interpretation and due diligence. Many circularity characteristics have been open to interpretation which in some cases is raising concern about ambiguous circularity claims.
